Stampede Parade: The official kick off to the 10 days of the Calgary Stampede is the parade. The parade starts at 9 AM on 6th Avenue and 3rd Street SE. It travels a whole 13 blocks west before turning left on 10th Street SW heading to 9th Avenue and then back to the finish line at 4th Street SE. If you plan on heading down to the festivities, go early (if you don’t already have tickets) streets in the downtown core start closing at 7:30 AM which can make for chaos when trying to park. Best bet is to take transit or park in outside of downtown and walk in.
Breakfast: If you aren’t heading to the parade, you may want to take in the Roosevelt Stampede Breakfast. Their complimentary breakfast runs from 8 am-11 am and the full bar is available starting at 8 am. Gotta love Stampede.
Coca-cola Stage: Walk Off The Earth plays on the Coca-Cola Stage at 9 pm tonight. This year has been a big year for the band from Burlington Ontario, taking home their first Juno. Their amazingly brilliant 5-people-playing-one-guitar interpretation of Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know” exploded on YouTube garnering over 35 million views in under 2 weeks. The great thing about the Coca-Cola stage is you can watch the show for free with your grounds admission fee. Yahoo!
Market Collective: Not sure you’re quite ready for the Stampede grounds on the first official day? Head to the Chinese Cultural Centre to take in Market Collective. Doors open at 4 pm and for a $5 admission fee you can peruse a range of local and Alberta-based vendors selling art, apparel, jewellery, decor and bath products. The Chinese Cultural Centre is located at 203 1 Street SW.
Bell Live Series at the King Eddy: The King Eddy is BACK! From 11 am-6 pm you can get in with no cover, from 6 pm onwards it’ll run you $20. For each evening performance the National Music Centre will release 100 online tickets and will be available up until 2 hours before the show. The Bell Live Series will bring you 10 days of boot stompin’, toe tappin’ good times. Have a look on their website for more information.
