The 2016 #CSFOODIE Best of Stampede Food Roundup

It’s the LAST weekend of Stampede, and there’s been teams of #CSFOODIE tasters including a Stmpdr insider running around the Midway tasting all of those foods so you can find out the very best!

It’s been a hard, tough slough, but after days and days of eating, here’s a collection of what the Stampede #CSFOODIE team has selected with some comments.

Crazy Cone's Apple Pie Ice Cream SandwichBest New Alternative – The Apple Pie Ice Cream Sandwich from Crazy Cone

This dessert was absolutely perfect. Not too sweet, not too rich, there was a balance of cool and slightly sweet that elevated it from a simple midway snack to an afternoon delight. And who knew? It’s gluten-free and lactose-free too!

Best BBQ - Boss Hogg's BBQ Ribs

Best BBQ – Boss Hogg’s BBQ Pork Ribs

Lean and mean, smoked over hours and has the right sauce (though it could use a little more kick), the Boss Hogg’s BBQ Pork Ribs delighted the celebrity judges. Special note: the Boss’s Feast at $30 is a pretty good bargain with ribs, chicken, pulled pork, cole slaw and beans for 2 people. It would definitely feed even 3.

Best Between Buns - R&R Bratwurst

Best Food Between Buns – R&R Bratwurst’s Bison Bratwurst

This isn’t your dad’s bratwurst. It’s big. VERY big, and very nicely spiced. If there was any weakness to this dish, it would be that the sauerkraut could have used a bit more of a kick.

Best Beverage - Family Squeezed Cantelope Lemonade

Best Beverage – Family Squeezed Cantelope Lemonade

This drink is one of beauty. Shared by the #CSFoodie crew and Shaw TV’s Kate Hutchinson, the descriptions went from “refreshing”, “delicious” to outright “heavenly.” It is very much a tasty drink, and on a hot day is the perfect accompaniment.

Best on a Stick - Frosted Flakes Chicken Tenders
Best on a Stick – Frosted Flakes Chicken Tenders

Best on a Stick – Chicken Tenders’ Chicken on a Stick

It’s a little bit sweet and a little bit salty, but it’s a protein packed crunchy party in your mouth. Buoyed with the power of Greeeeeeatness, it’s one that definitely pleases.

Summerland Self Serve Pineapple Whip

Best Sweet Treat – Summerland Soft Serve’s Pineapple Whip Float

A drink that was only seen in the wilds of Disneyland or the world-famous Dole plantation in Hawaii, this dairy-free pineapple sorbet is a marvel. It comes across as creamy, slightly sweet and totally delightful to the palate, it is a MUST try and fat free too!

Best Pizza - Rick's Pizza
Best Pizza – Rick’s Pizza

Best Pizza – Rick’s Pizza

Selected by Calgary Stampeders’ Frank Beltre & Derek Wiggan, this slice made in a NYC style was their favorite. Thin crust (but not Neapolitan) , a balance of sauce and cheese, a good amount of pepperoni and/or pineapple, this was the slice that took the ball to the end zone for a touchdown. The pizza that was the measure was pepperoni (for Derek Wiggan) and hawaiian (for Frank Beltre).

A special note: Pizza Bakeria between the Grandstand and the Erlton gate has mac n’ cheese pizza which was quite good and liked by the CSFoodie team.

Best Fusion - Big T's Smoked Chicken and Waffles

Best Fusion – Big T’s Smoked Chicken & Waffle

Eaten happily by the CSFoodie crew during Friday’s monsoon, the warmth of the chicken not only warmed the team’s stomachs, but their hearts as well. Nicely seasoned in a crispy waffle cone, it’s a whole chicken breast from Calgary’s own Big T’s BBQ. If you decide to only have one item all Stampede, you would do well to have this one.

Best New Foods - Teriyaki Chicken Perogies and the Salted Caramel Deep Fried Coffee
Best New Foods – Teriyaki Chicken Perogies and the Salted Caramel Deep Fried Coffee

Best New Foods – International Perogies’ Teriyaki Chicken Perogies & the Ogopogo Salted Caramel Deep Fried Coffee

Selected by the great celebrity judge contest on Sneak-A-Peek day, subsequent tastings by the CSFoodie team happily confirmed that those selections were dead on.

The International Perogies are true perogies, plump and filled with tasty chicken. It’s not like normal dumplings as it comes across in true perogy form with the doughy texture, topped by an equally tasty sauce to match.

The Deep Fried Coffee by Ogopogo comes across as a freshly made warm gourmet timbit. It’s only in eating it that the tastes come apparent as coffee is infused with the batter, and the toppings vary with the type of “coffee” you like to drink.

Best Value - Wrap Daddy's Wraps
Best Value – Wrap Daddy’s Wraps

Best Value – Wrap Daddy’s

A gem at Dragon Boat Festivals, music concerts and local events from Vancouver to Calgary, Wrap Daddy’s has been making their unique cone wraps available for the more healthy minded. One wrap is more than enough for the average hungry diner, and it is definitely healthier than the usual Midway fried fare. Highly recommended and is a winner in any category any time.
